Raziskava vodilne Harvard Univerze je pokazala, da s pandemijo vodenje virtualnih timov postaja še težje. Študija, izvedena na vzorcu 275 vodilnih mednarodnih menedžerjev po vsem svetu o tem, kako se pri vodenju soočajo z izzivi COVID-19, je med glavne izzive izpostavila pomanjkljivosti glede jasnosti vloge ekipe pri agendi vodenja v virtualnem okolju, nejasnosti medosebnih povezav zaradi oddaljenega dela ter nizke motivacije ter prevelike delovne obremenitve, ki jih je prineslo virtualno delovno okolje (Mortensen, in Hadley, 2020). Za uspešno vodenje virtualnih ekip v dobi digitalizacije zato v ospredje postavljamo vprašanje modela razvoja kompetenc vodenja virtualnih timov.
